Ceiling Fan Light Repair

Do you have a perfectly good ceiling fan but the pull chain to the light kit is broken? The pull chain can be replaced very simply for less than five dollars.

The first thing you must do is to turn off the electrical power to the fan. Most of the time the power source is a switch on the wall, but not always; if not then you will have to turn off the power at a breaker or fuse box.

Once you have turned off the electrical power to the fan and light, now we can get started. Remove the light globe or glass cover then look for the set screws that hold the light kit to the ceiling fan base. Unscrew and drop the kit will all of the wires being exposed.

The pull chain light switch will be an assembly including a brass finial on the outside of the light kit housing. Disconnect or cut loose the wires from the fan; there will be a black, white, and green wire. Once you have removed the switch, take it to the hardware store and match it up with the same type; there are many types and I have found this is the simplest

manner to save you time and headaches.

Reattach the switch matching up the black, white and green wires using screw nuts that should have been provided with

the new switch. Now carefully pack all of the wires back into the light kit case and reattach the bottom, then reattach

the globe or glass cover.

Turn the electrical power back to the ceiling fan and light. If the light doesn’t come on, turn the power back off and check for loose wires; also check the colored wires to make sure they were correctly connected. If each of these steps were carefully adhered to, then your light will work, now enjoy this small feat.
